SENEGAL Support for health posts in Malicounda Koutal and Dijlacounda

The project started in 2020: every week Dr Athanase Sarr, a doctor selected by Comme Nous and supported by the Carlo Urbani Prize grant (AICU), visits, without any charge, patients at the Malicounda health post, located near Mbour. The health post is managed by a nurse who collaborates with a midwife and a pharmacist. The presence of Dr Sarr, a competent and dedicated young doctor, has improved healthcare and the management of the dispensary. With Dr Sarr’s contribution, some needs were also identified for the renovation and purchase of healthcare materials and equipment, which were supplied in 2020.

In May 2020, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, support was added to the Koutal health post, near Kaolak. In the Koutal clinic, Dr. Babacar L. Diouf, also a recipient of the Urbani Prize, visits the patients belonging to the center once a week. The dispensary is a former leper colony frequented by many sick people, some still being treated for leprosy, others for chronic diseases.

The support of Dr Babacar’s visits has been greatly appreciated by the local community. Furthermore, in the years after 2020 restructuring interventions have also been carried out and medical equipment purchased, with the aim of improve the management of the health centres and their patients. In particular, the Koutal dispensary has been greatly improved with renovation of the bathrooms, hospital room and obstetric room, and repair of the ambulance for a total cost of 6,000 euros. Currently, in Koutal, Dr Mbaye visits patients every Saturday for free.
From 2022, assessing a greater need, the Malicounda health post has been replaced by the Dijlacounda dispensary in the Casamance region. Dr Mancadiang visits patients free of charge in Dijlacounda one day a week.

Support will continue in 2024 in Dijlacounda and Koutal.
